Depressive disorders are among the most
frequently encountered mental illnesses in
the primary care setting. Major depressive
disorder (MDD), known colloquially as
“clinical depression,” will be experienced
by 1 in 6 people in the United States at
some point in their lives.1 The personal,
societal, and economic costs of MDD and
other depressive disorders are profound:
• Among the 90% of US suicides attributable
to diagnosable mental disorders, depressive disorders are the most significant contributors 2
• MDD is the leading cause of disability among US people aged 15 to 442
• In the United States, MDD incurs an annual cost of approximately $83 billion: $26.1 billion for medical care, $5.4 billion for suicide-related mortality, and $51.5
